The Sankofa School Day

A day at Sankofa is modeled around providing the student a rigorous, nurturing and balanced daily routine. The following represents a typical day in the life of a student at Sankofa.

8:55am-9:20am

ARRIVAL

Faculty and Staff greet students as they enter the building. Free breakfast is available for all students to pick up on their way to class.

9:20am-9:50am

MORNING CIRCLE

Morning Circle is an intentional time built into the beginning of each day. Teachers lead students through social / emotional wellness checks using various techniques and exercises that centers the student and prepares them for a day of learning and discovery.

9:50am-Lunch

MORNING LEARNING

The morning learning block looks different depending on the age and grade level of the student. We provide wrap-around learning strategies to ensure that we take every student at their current level and provide them the tools to grow from that point. There is no cookie cutter model and we are constantly adapting and learning how to best serve our students.

30 Min between 11:00am-1:45pm

LUNCH

Our students enjoy 30 minutes of lunchtime to pause during the school day and engage with each other on a social level. We encourage social engagement and interaction between peers, as the development of a child depends heavily on their ability to navigate social norms amongst each other along with their adult supervisors during this time.

AFTERNOON LEARNING

Like morning learning block, each grade has a catered menu of learning opportunities. Along with our core subjects, students are exposed to a breadth of electives (PE, Visual Arts, Social Emotional Learning)

3:40pm-4:00pm

CLOSING CIRCLE

Our Closing Circle is a time where teachers develop a platform where students feel empowered to feel safe and share using a common healthy language. This in turn builds social and emotional skill sets that our students will continue to grow throughout their adolescence.

DISMISSAL

As our day ends, we provide extra-curricular activites along with tutoring throughout the year to provide supplementary engagement opportunities. This includes a sports program and student proposed activity groups.
